MySuper vs Choice Super: What Is the Difference?
If you have ever looked closely at your super statement, you may have noticed your fund offers something called MySuper alongside a longer list of “Choice” options. Here is what that actually means and how to decide which one is right for you.
What Is MySuper?
MySuper is a simple, low cost default investment option that every super fund must offer. It was introduced by the government to give people a straightforward, no frills option if they do not want to actively choose how their super is invested. If you have never selected an investment option yourself, your super is very likely sitting in your fund’s MySuper product ↗ right now.
MySuper products are required to meet minimum standards on fees, disclosure, and insurance, and are the products APRA publishes performance data for, which is exactly what powers our Compare page.
What Is Choice Super?
Choice super refers to the full range of other investment options a fund offers beyond its default MySuper product. This can include options like Conservative, Balanced, Growth, High Growth, or even single asset class options like Australian Shares or Cash. Some funds offer dozens of choice options, letting you build a more tailored investment mix based on your own risk tolerance and timeline.
Key Differences
- MySuper is simple, low cost, and designed to suit most people without any input needed
- Choice super gives you more control, but usually comes with more decisions and, in some cases, higher fees for specialised options
Neither is universally better. MySuper suits people who would rather not actively manage their investment mix. Choice options make more sense if you have a specific strategy, a different risk appetite, or want to exclude certain industries or asset classes.
How to Decide
Start by checking which option you are currently in. Compare your fund’s MySuper fees and performance against other funds on our Compare page, and if considering a Choice option, ask your fund directly for that specific option’s fee and performance history, since it differs from the MySuper figures shown publicly.
